The biggest AI systems receive most of the attention, yet I keep coming back to smaller models and local tools. There is something appealing about technology that can live closer to the person using it.

Running a model locally changes the questions. Privacy becomes tangible. Speed depends on the machine in front of you. Limitations are easier to see, and those limitations can encourage more deliberate experiments.

This does not make local AI the answer to every problem. Large hosted models remain remarkably capable, and maintaining local tools has its own friction. The interesting space is the trade-off: capability against control, convenience against privacy, scale against specificity.

Perhaps the future is not one universal assistant. It may be a collection of smaller, more personal systems that understand a narrow context well and leave sensitive information where it belongs.

That possibility feels less dramatic than the usual AI narrative, but much more human. I am curious which direction other people are exploring.
